What happened next would become the stuff of legend. In a battle that lasted over 30 minutes, Casper single-handedly fought off the entire pack, killing 8 coyotes and chasing away the remaining 3. His bravery saved every single sheep in his care.

The cost was high - Casper disappeared for two days, returning home with severe injuries including torn skin and part of his tail missing. But his indomitable spirit prevailed, and with the support of the community and veterinary care, he made a full recovery.

Recognition & Recovery

Casper's story quickly spread beyond his small farm, capturing hearts across the nation. The community rallied around him, raising over $15,000 through GoFundMe to cover his extensive veterinary costs.

His bravery didn't go unnoticed by official channels either. In recognition of his heroic actions, Casper was nominated for the Farm Dog of the Year award by the American Farm Bureau Federation. In January 2024, he won the People's Choice Pup title, receiving a trophy, Purina products, and a $1,000 cash prize that was donated to LifeLine Animal Project.

Casper's story also highlighted the important role of livestock guardian dogs and the challenges faced by Great Pyrenees dogs, including high abandonment rates and overbreeding issues in the southeast.
